T.J. Maxx Department Store

Project Scope for a T.J. Maxx Department Store

Existing wood bowstring roof truss investigation, temporary shoring design, and structural engineering design of in-place truss repair were performed at a well-known American department store chain T.J. Maxx.

Brief Project Overview

MUELLER & ASSOCIATES CONSULTING, LLC (MA) was called in to perform an emergency investigation and subsequent shoring of structurally compromised wood bowstring roof trusses. Two of the bottom truss chords had snapped at the web member connection and the associated web members had snapped as well. After performing structural engineering analysis of the truss the design was determined to be deficient and the truss was also overloaded with HVAC equipment, as a result, modifications were designed. Modifications incorporated into the engineering repair drawings included the replacement of the bottom chord, metal shoe plates, and web members. Services provided included structural analysis of the existing wood truss for the current code-mandated roof loading. In addition, design and detail strengthening repairs were performed. The preparation of structural repair documents for in situ truss repairs were also included.
